Measuring your gear for custom foam

The tool

A caliper gives the best accuracy. Failing that, use a rigid ruler and two books placed on either side of the device: the books mark the outermost points, and you measure the gap between them.

Measure the device as it will be stored

• lens: front and rear caps on, hood removed;
• body: body cap on, with or without a handle depending on how you use it;
• drone: folded, propellers folded, gimbal cover on;
• gimbal: folded, axes locked, plate removed.

The three dimensions

1. length: the largest dimension;
2. width: the largest dimension at right angles to the length;
3. height: the thickness, counting everything that sticks out (dials, hot shoe, handle).

For a cylindrical item, measure the diameter at its widest point and the overall length.

Common mistakes

• forgetting a protruding part: that is the part that will force the device into the foam;
• rounding down: always round up to the next millimetre;
• measuring on the diagonal: the ruler must stay parallel to the faces of the device.
