Pick-and-pluck foam or custom-cut foam?

Many hard cases come with a foam scored into small cubes that you pull out. Custom cutting starts instead from a plan drawn to the dimensions of the gear. Here are the differences, so you can choose for your kit and the way you carry it.

Pick-and-pluck foam

A block of soft foam pre-scored into columns a few centimetres wide: you pull out the cubes where each device goes. It is quick, it comes with some cases, and you can do it yourself.

  • the outlines follow the grid: check the hold you get, especially around curves;
  • the depth depends on the layers available: some kits stack several so each pocket has the right depth;
  • the walls must keep the thicknesses recommended by the manufacturer;
  • the material and density vary by product: read its specification and keep an eye on the state of the insert.

Custom-cut foam

A sheet of closed-cell EVA foam, cut by a computer-controlled machine from a plan: the dimensions and depth of each pocket are computed from the dimensions of the gear.

  • the outline is simplified from the device’s dimensions, with a clearance set by how reliable those dimensions are;
  • each pocket has its own depth: the height of the device plus 2 mm, grouped into three cutting levels at most, with at least 15 mm of foam underneath;
  • the walls between pockets are 10, 13 or 15 mm depending on their depth, and the foam keeps at least 20 mm all around the case;
  • a finger notch lets you lift each device out without forcing it;
  • the foam is closed-cell EVA; how well it holds your gear is still for you to check on delivery.

Which one to choose

Pick-and-pluck foam suits you if you want to shape the pockets yourself from a grid. Custom foam suits you if you would rather define the pockets in a plan before cutting, especially for a kit that does not change much. Compare the price, the usable depths and whether the foam can be replaced. Our configurator prepares that plan from your gear list; it is not a comparative protection test.

What if my gear changes?

A custom foam is made for one kit. If you change body or lens, you can order the foam alone, without the case, for the same Foamd shell model. Check the size you choose and select “The foam only” at the “Size and layout” step of the configurator.
